I got to New York and took the subway to 72nd on the 1 line. I said to my friend, "I need foldable pizza" - and we found ourselves at City Pie. I liked it fine. I had the basil, tomato, and mozzarella slice (kind of silly...there's already mozzarella on pizzas) and it was good, the basil was nice and fresh before the oven warm-up. I also had a plain slice just for the sheer joy of Brooklyn-style pizza, but it broke instead of folding - too crispy. I'd probably order from City Pie if I needed pizza delivered - the prices are reasonable and it's not bad food. (I've heard the garlic knots are delicious!)

No stars. This place is the worst. We ordered a pizza and 1 hour and 40 minutes later it finally showed up. This place is ridiculous. The pizza was totally cold. I will never order from here again.

Worst experience ever, other than having to be screamed at outside of the restaurant by a homeless man who was on a lot of substances. This restaurant has the worst service you could possibly imagine. The lady at the counter was rude, as well as the woman working the cash register (who was very hard to understand). They told us the wrong place to order things, and we ended up having to go to the back of the line. She took her attitude out on us, by making our food cold because we confronted her about her mistake. I am so outraged by this service, I had to save other people from it. I am not one who complains either.

NY style pizza by the slice. Not bad, not great. If you happen to be walking by and want a quick snack this will work. But don't go out of your way.

This is a 3.5-star neighborhood pizzeria, but I'll round up to counteract some of the silly comments I see below. I live on this block, so I go here pretty often. A few years ago, they switched to a thin crust, which, yes, sometimes is a little brittle, but limits the calories, so, overall win. They stay open pretty late (11ish?), they're friendly, and the pie is better than serviceable. I like the white slices, the very colorful vegetarian, and for a bargain, the supreme, which seems to have 4 ingredients for the price of 2 or 3. You can find better pizza in the city, but you can also find much worse. There's usually a sports game on the TV, not a bad place to pass a little time.

I never would've heard of this place, had I not been hanging out the apartment building that's on top of it. We ordered two pies (just bring them upstairs, please) and they were way good. I don't think I'd travel to the UWS just for this, but I would definitely stop by again if I was in the area.

  • Dom C.

Average sort of pizza place that's good for a quick slice or is where we order delivery from if we haven't got the energy to go to Patsy's. As other reviews have said it can be a bit hit or miss especially when you're ordering a whole pie as sometimes the bottom is not quite as crispy as I'd like. As I said, overall it's pretty average, if you want great pizza just go to Patsy's!

Good pizza. Fast service. No complaints. The best pizza option around for a few blocks with an super handy location.

This restaurant DID NOT provide a pleasant experience. I was visiting NYC for my first time and wanted to try the famous pizza people rave about. Starving and excited, my friends and I found City Pie. The prices seemed reasonable so we gave it a shot...worst idea ever. After finishing our average pizza we put our jackets on and began to walk out and one of the employees began to yell at us saying we did not pay for a slice. He did not inform us before eating that he did not charge us correctly and waited until we were already done so we had no choice. I will never be back to the spot and I strongly urge people to stay clear!!

  • Conor K.

Cheap, but not very good. The pizza is worth the price if you're in the mood for pizza, are on the block, and get the special. If not, not worth it.

    (2)
  • Jen L.

Tiny restaurant, fine pizza-conveniently located to grab a slice on the way home from the park. Nothing special however and I wouldn't go out of my way, but they are nice and kid friendly.

  • Janel Y.

Stopped by on a whim because we were both hungry. The pizza looked super fresh and it smelled so mouth-watering that I ordered a slice (which turned out to have just come out of the oven) and devoured it. It was so good I finished the thin NY style slice in a matter of minutes. Bathroom in the back and friendly service. If I was in the area, would definitely come back for more fresh slices of the thinnest NY pizza I've ever had! Note: 1 top slice $3.10; 2 top slice $3.50

  • Simone W.

The pizza was average. The service was nothing spectacular. The prices inexpensive. Standard pizza joint with mediocre pizza.

    (3)
  • Justin H.

You know, the pizza here isn't incredible, but I do think it's better than any of the by the slice options within a few blocks that I've had. The negative point is that their toppings aren't particularly flavorful. The positive is that they do a great job with their crust: the bottom of it is always crispy and cracks when you fold it, while the exposed layers are still chewy and soft enough to hold the pizza together so nothing comes oozing out. In fact, it might be one of my favorites. If only they could add more flavor!

    (3)
  • Nelson X.

Very average pizza. Okay for UWS. This would not be my choice for neighborhood slice. Cheers! N.

Great pizza for a good price. They even gave us the garlic knots for free. The whole wheat pizza was yummy.

I'm not really picky when it comes to pizza. I eat Domino's all the time. I'm always on 72nd, so I decided to give City Pie a try. The slices in the display case look hurt. They look like they've been there for a whiiiile. The 2 slices I ordered, looked the same way they did out of the oven as they did in the display case...bad. The thin slice, lacked in taste and flavor. They were so dry. Seriously, it tasted like nothing. I added some extra ingredients and still. Next time I'm looking for pizza and I'm on 72nd, I'll keep walking passed City Pie.

  • Texican J.

I stopped by City Pie for a quick, cheap bite. I was allured by a sign outside of the restaurant, advertising two slices and a drink for $5.97, $4.97 for students (which is really great for NY.) Here's what I got: 2 slices of the plain pizza with paper-thin crust and a small fountain drink (a little larger than a dixie cup.) The restaurant was clean, the staff polite, the pizza was decent and I left feeling full. Did I feel a little cheated? Yeah, kind of. Would I go back? Probably so.

  • Tony H.

Pizza tasted great and was quite affordable. We went there a little early (11:30) and received prompt service, ordering two slices each. Took the food out to Central Park for a nice lunch.

City Pie doesn't look fancy, and it isn't - it's just an incredibly consistent, tasty slice in a neighborhood not overflowing with terrific pizza. I live in the neighborhood, and when we moved here we tried a number of different local pizza joints. City Pie is the best of the bunch, with thin crust, tasty sauce that isn't bitter or excessively tomato-y (for lack of a better word). Just the right amount of cheese and fresh mushrooms (being from California, the use of canned mushrooms on pizza is an abomination to me) get it the extra star. You aren't coming to a place like City Pie for the ambience, so expect either to take your slice with you and eat it on the go or get their good (but not lightning) delivery. For pizza in the 70s (if you don't want a whole pie from Patsy's), City Pie is a solid choice.

Naaa... not terrible but not good either.

It was great pizza. I had a slice here 2 times and today upon arriving I saw that it's closed. :-(

Who can beat 7$ for 2 slices & a drink! The slice is perfect the staff friendly. My fave pizza in the city!

  • Dave T.

I forgot to update this with the rude response I got from the owner that day. And... the product was crap. ;) xoxo! "I see that you're a fan of procedures. If so, why not use just the widely accepted English words to express your grievances? Anyway, how about the product? Did you like it? Oh, and to answer your question: We're running a great business!"

    (1)
  • Raymond G.

Mediocre at best. Soggy bread and served lukewarm. The staff was also pretty stiff. With so many other pizza spots in the area I don't see why would go back.

    (2)
  • Shay R.

Food is yummy, however their customer service is very poor. My coworker and I ordered a slice each and a salad for delivery along with a slice. A man from the store we spoke to was polite, but the next day when I decided to order again a woman with an accent picked up this time, when I placed the same order she sucked her teeth and said "we don't deliver slices". I told her I just ordered a slice and salad yesterday and she just raised her voice saying they won't deliver that. She needs to work on her phone manners. She's not so pleasant in person either. Other than that good food.

CityPie is a near and dear establishment for me on the UWS. I met the owner and manager- Tibi V-fresh out of college as a Coca-Cola sales rep in the early 2000s. CityPie became one of my favorite places, and still is. Food is prepared fresh, using superior quality ingredients. In addition to pizza, CityPie serves homemade pasta penne dishes that are nutritious and figure-friendly. The day after Sandy, it was one of the few places open on the UWS. It also has a cool big screen TV and contemporary, stylish decor. You can find Tibi's great photography on the walls (but shh - don't mention it initially, as the artist is very modest) Go there on a date, on a pit stop after shopping, or when you feel like gossiping about dating in the City.

Sometimes you just crave crappy pizza. Sometimes you just want that crunchy crust that folds like a stiff cardboard box and tastes just as good. Sometimes you just want the thin, anemic toppings that gloss over the glistening sheen of the pizza slice. Sometimes you actually crave a paucity of flavour, one devoid of salt and pepper and an attempt at mild seasoning at best. I may say all these things facetiously, but yet it's all true, and it's why I actually DO return from time to time to eat at City Pie. Well, that, and I live so darn close. But in addition to the aforementioned tongue-in-cheek virtues and attractions, their pizza is not overly greasy, and you don't leave feeling obscenely bloated and ready to keel over on to your backside. It ain't the best in town and it's not gonna win any awards. But they fulfill a very special niche of pizza that grows close to my own heart, and I, for one, am certain that I will want to fill that niche from time to time, as long as it takes less time to walk to City Pie than it does to simply fry an egg.

The worst pizza slice I've had in NY. Then there's the bad service and unclean restaurant.

  • Albert W.

In my family, we eat pizza many times a week. I travel all over for great pizza & I like most all kinds. CITY PIE has to be one of the best places with the nicest staff & most accommodating owners I have ever come across. My taste buds tell me they use high quality ingredients. The sauce, the cheese...really delicious, with thin crust. They also make a variety of other wonderful Italian offerings, & fresh salads (which my wife loves) as well. My boys are currently into the Chicken Roll baked in doe & the Meatball pizza, also the garlics knots with sauce. You can get good pizza on almost every corner in NY, but this is something special.

  • Ashley T.

Pizza is okay. The have a great student deal. And the employees are very nice. Don't ever get a salad. I witnessed an employee making one without wearing gloves. Having worked in the food industry before, I know what hands touch. It's a health regulation for a reason!

  • Eric L.

City Pie has consistently good pizza which is a good thing because that's basically all they do. It's definitely one of the better pizza places on the UWS (near 72nd st). I've never been inside, only gotten delivery. But their delivery might be one of the best customer service stories I've been a part of in a while. They sent a pie and forgot to cut it. I had just moved in and didn't have anything to cut the pizza with. So the owner himself came out with a pizza cutter and cut it. This is why I only order from City Pie when I get pizza on the UWS.

  • Kimberly W.

I've ordered both by the slice and picked up for a whole pie, and they're both pretty good. I'm really happy to report that their crust isn't over-done or over-chewy or overcooked, their sauce is delicious, and their cheese is NOT over-greasy, the way that so many other neighborhood joints are. (I'm looking straight at you, Big Nick's). The ingredients are fresh and have a really nice tenderness, while not spilling off the top of the pie. No one's coming to a pizza joint for fine dining, but when you have a craving, I would take this place over almost any other place in the neighborhood. Their staff is usually friendly, the space is more open (if more plastic-y) than the harried, crowded, brusque-to-the-point-of-rude service and vibe at Patsy's, and the pizza is tasty. What else could you ask for?

    (4)
  • Mark H.

This place is bland, boring, milque-toast, yawn-inducing. If you absolutely need a slice of pizza, and you happen to find yourself at the intersection of Amsterdam and 72nd, then by all means go inside. Otherwise, prepare yourself for bland sauce and tasteless crust. The cheese and thin-crust are pluses, but with the negatives, they average out to a big fat ZERO. Sheesh. Pizza. NYC. Gimme a break City Pie! Do some pizza research! Go to pizza school or something!

Ever since I joined Yelp I've realized something about myself that I had never realized before: wtf, I eat pizza nearly every damn day! I don't know how this escaped my notice previously but it's true, it had. Now that I review everywhere I eat and everything I do, I'm noticing it's all pizza all the time. It's just such a great food. It's cheap and fast, filling but not too filling. And as tomatoes, cheese and bread are my favorite foods (in that order), pizza is the best of all possible worlds. So, anyway, City Pie is in my pizza-every-day rotation. It's a really good thin crust with decent sauce and cheese. It probably deserves 3 1/2 stars but I'm upgrading them to 4 because the pizza always seems fresh and the place is pretty clean for a pizza joint.

  • La Toya L.

If you're a fan of super thin pizza and delicious cheese, this is the place for you. The prices are about the same as most pizza places now-a-days...and there's a 2 slice and a medium slice deal that you might want to take advantage of. That's IF you can eat only two slices. This is strictly for people who want a quick slice that is tasty. If you want fine dining, there are a zillion other places to go. All sorts of crowds go through there, high school kids especially, so avoid the place around 3pm if you want to sit down and eat. I don't suggest going too late however, as the pizza only tastes good when certain people are making it. I don't know what happens after 8pm. The thin crust makes a dieter feel like they're not cheating *that much* :]

    (4)
  • Scott R.

City Pie. Sounds a little like Cutie Pie. Tastes a lot like Shitty Pie. Not sure what the other reviewers saw in this place. The slice I had was just tasteless. The crust was thin and crispy but no taste whatsoever in the cheese and tomato. They seem accommodating - they'll use whole wheat, they'll take $$ off your pie if you ask for less cheese. Too bad their pizza sucks.

    (2)
  • Elvisa M.

Service was wonderful. Pizza was fresh and they do not skim on the toppings. The veggie and meatball pies are wonderful. The best pie is buffalo chicken. Every time I in the area I have to stop by and get something. Absolute love this place!

    (5)
  • Jeff G.

The pizza sits on the counter for ages and heated and served. Needless to say In a city with so many great pizza places one can pass City Pie with no regrets.

    (3)
  • Ryan W.

City Pie's plain slice initially was underwhelming. It's on the small side compared to other pizzerias' slices, and the first bite seemed disappointing, but belied the actuality: this is good pizza. The pizza here has very thin crust. When served the very bottom is brittle enough that mine cracked when I folded it, making a mini-slice. The further into the slice you eat, the more you like its texture. The slice was topped with a fair amount of sauce, and I was really impressed with the cheese. It tasted fresh and was just a little bit stringy. By the last bite I was a convinced and wished that their slices were bigger because they're delicious!

    (4)
  • J M.

I like the super thin crust. Pretty decent pizza, I've had better and I've had worse. I'd go here again if I was in the neighborhood and wanted a slice.

    (3)

Decent vegetable and sausage pizza for the neighborhood...

  • Maxwell B.

This place has a great slice of new york city style pizza for all you upper westers and tourist alike! the pizza is a thin crust will great cheese and very fresh indigents. BUT even if your not in the mood for pizza the place has a great pasta bar. Another great thing about this place is it offers whole wheat for the pizza and the pasta. The counter staff is all was very friendly and causal and very happy to fulfill and request.

  • howard T.

so just as with big nicks I eat this pizza a lot, again for the same reason's cheap promoters buy pizza to save money on the meal buyout at SummerStage, I mean really how many times can you eat pizza, this is better then big nick's but not by much, although their sausage on their pie is significantly less greasy then big nick's, otherwise it's good generic pizza, nothing stand out good sauce, but just average. Handicapped accessible, not sure about the bathrooms,

  • Ryan D.

Rating pizza in New York is a combat sport. You can't say you like a particular slice without some a-hole trying to prove he's lived in New York one month longer than you by saying "you like [insert your favorite pizzeria here]? You're obviously a hayseed from Wisconsin". I'm not from Wisconsin, but I'm also not a native New Yorker. With that caveat aside, I really like City Pie. For my money it's the best slice in the southern reaches of the Upper West Side (i.e. 79th-59th Streets). Good, crisp crust. Sauce that is slightly garlicky and savory, not corn syrupy sweet, and not greasy at all. A good solid slice in a neighborhood not known for them. Beware the crowd from 3-4pm on weekdays. Loud, obnoxious high school kids. Get a slice to go during those times.

    (4)
  • Stephanie O.

The first time I had a slice I really liked it. The second time I was a little more disappointed. Maybe I was really hungry that first time. My boyfriend also thought it was just average. Not the best place for pizza, but not the worse. If you are walking by and have a sudden pizza craving it will do, but don't go out of your way to come here. Good price and I've always had friendly staff. Closes kinda early at 10pm weekdays and 11pm weekends.

    (3)
  • Jennifer R.

Quite possibly the worst slice of pizza I've ever had. The only redeeming factor was the it was super thin, which I actually enjoy. But when it just doesn't taste good, what does it matter? Might as well have eaten a piece of cardboard with some sauce and rubbery cheese.

    (1)
  • Jerry L.

    My favorite pizza in NYC.

    (4)
  • Ann G.

I think the pizza here is great! Some of the better pizza I've eaten in NYC. The crust is thin and flaky. It's better than the thick, doughy and heavy crust that many places serve.

    (4)
  • Jeff O.

I feel like this place really limits itself - and generates negative reviews - with its weak by-the-slice selection, because when I order whole pies, they're always really impressive. Order portobello mushrooms and you get tons of HUGE pieces of real-deal portobellos. Order pineapple and you get slices of fruit that's clearly fresh. Meat is totally not mysterious. And the crust is completely respectable - crisp but with a chew, neither dry nor doughy. For the UWS, a very good bet.

    (4)
  • Dave P.

Not sure why there are so many terrible reviews, I happen to really like the pizza here and get it once or twice a week for lunch. Its a bit underseasoned and bland, but I often LIKE that in my pizza as it makes it really easy to eat quickly. The ingredients taste fresh and the pizza is super thin. The only negative is that the woman at the cash register always looks pissed off and barely pays attention when I tell her what I ordered so I have to repeat myself. That said, the interior is decent and air conditioned in the summer, and usually there is a sporting event on the TV so that during my lunch break I can relax for 20 minutes or so and take my mind off things.

  • Carolyn M.

I was pretty excited to see Buffalo Chicken Pizza on the menu - all of my favorite pizza ingredients on top of a tasty NY crust. HOWEVER, this pizza was borderline disgusting. Every piece of chicken I bit into was hard and/or gristle-icious. I had to spit most of it out. The sauce was tasty and so was the cheese, but the chicken pretty much ruined my overall enjoyment. Delivery came quick, and price was reasonable - I guess you get what you pay for with this place.

    (2)
  • Bradley K.

I placed an order at 12:04pm and received my pizza at 1:26pm after three calls to them. I'll wait for good pizza but theirs was average/serviceable. And they didn't even offer a discount for delivery that took almost an hour and a half and three phone calls (I didn't ask for one but they never offered).

    (1)
  • Jimmy G. M.

Grear spot! Good music, nice small TV showing sports and customer service was good. Pizza is good but the sauce could use a little more seasoning, besides that everything was great.
